In addition to their iPad and iPhone App, The Times have created a new, specially optimised 'Interactive World Cup' Planner feature.

Development of the App feature follows other Apps such as the ITV1 2010 FIFA World Cup iPhone App. The Sun and The Telegraph have also created similar features.

The new iPad App allows users see different stages of the competition to find out the scores matches and see information for forthcoming matches. Player cards also feature for each player in both teams involved in a matches which flips over to reveal World Cup stats.

The Apps provide a great replacement for wallcharts as you don't need to fill them in; they fill in themselves! However, this might depersonalise the app slightly, perhaps there could have been a way of incorporating this but without too much hassle? Maybe new the technology won't mean the end of the wallchart after all.

Aardman

24th May 2010 | Posted by Alex

The latest shorts to come from Aardman Animations are part of a self funded project which showcases the directors of the company.

Fly, directed by Alan Short, is a film which pays homage to such animation greats as Tex Avery and Chuck Jones with a series of foolhardy gags. Made using Maya and After Effects, the main character, a couch-potato living in an old 1970s decorated apartment, is irritated by an insect whilst trying to watch TV.

Short comments on Creative Review;

"The character design is extreme to say the least. Both the man and dog are each the result of just one or two quick drawings - I'm not a fan of over-designing, I prefer the freshness that you get from working quickly and loosely. The intention was for the characters to look funny in their own right yet not over-shadow the humour of the performances.

"We experimented with the look of the environment, as we initially thought that the extreme design of the two hero characters would need an equally stylised apartment to live in but, in actual fact, we found that a fairly realistic-looking set worked pretty well in the end.

"The crazy 1970s style patterns helped a lot, with horribly clashing wallpaper and carpet. We liked the idea that the flat hadn't changed in years, yet the man has a brand new and contemporary television set, suggesting that he cares nothing about lifestyle and soft furnishings but TV is a very important thing in his life!"

You can view Fly here on YouTube.

Nigel Davies also created the short Blind Date (see here), which tells the story of a lighthouse keeper's search for true love. The film takes on a darker, more sketchy feel in comparison to Short's. Davies comments on the creative process;

"A consequence of an early exploration into an all CGI treatment was incorporated in the environments. Drawn background layouts were projected onto geometry in Maya, this gave us the possibility to use 3D camera moves in some shots and a 3D quality to selected background elements. From these Maya scenes line, depth, colour and shading passes were rendered out; these were combined in After Effects with the drawn character layers."

2012 Olympic Mascots

20th May 2010 | Posted by Luke

Yesterday evening, the 2012 Olympic Games Committee unveiled the new Olympic mascots. Wenlock for the Olympics and Mandeville for the Paralympics.

A charming animation on the main site (here) tells the story of the characters' creation from two drops of steel. Following the reaction to the identity, any creative that follows is going to have a tough time in front of the media, but the digital campaign that has emerged from the two characters has already made them a success. You can follow their twitter feed here, or become a fan on Facebook.
